Understanding 480p, 720p, 1080p, 4K, WEB-DL and WEBRip

Useful movie and web-series guide

Video labels can be confusing because resolution, source, bitrate and codec describe different things. This guide explains the most common terms shown on movie and web-series information pages.

Resolution labels

Resolution refers to the number of pixels used to form the image. A 480p video is commonly selected for smaller file size and mobile viewing. A 720p video is considered HD and provides a practical balance for many devices. A 1080p video is Full HD and is better suited to larger screens when bandwidth and storage allow. A 2160p video is commonly called 4K.

Resolution alone does not determine quality. A badly compressed 1080p video can look worse than a carefully encoded 720p version. Bitrate, codec and source quality also matter.

WEB-DL, WEBRip and Blu-ray

WEB-DL generally describes video obtained from an online distribution source without an additional screen capture. WEBRip is an encode made from a web source and may have been processed differently. Blu-ray commonly refers to a source based on a Blu-ray release and can provide strong picture quality when encoded well.

These terms should be read together with resolution and file size. They are not a guarantee that every device will play the file smoothly.

File size, bitrate and codec

File size depends on duration, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, audio tracks and codec. Modern codecs can preserve useful quality at a smaller size, but older devices may have limited compatibility. Multiple audio tracks can also increase the file size.

Before selecting a version, visitors should consider free storage space, mobile data limits, internet stability and the display being used. The largest file is not necessary for every situation.

Audio and subtitle information

Audio fields can identify original language, Hindi dubbed, English, dual audio or multi-audio options. Subtitles may be embedded, optional or unavailable. A dual-audio label should ideally be accompanied by the names of both languages.

Visitors should review the complete information section instead of assuming language or subtitle availability from the title alone. When information is missing, the support option can be used to request clarification.
